Balancing Act

We started our first science unit at the beginning of this week! It's called "Balance and Motion". If you click HERE, you can visit the company's website. There are super fun games and activities that can continue the learning at home!
We've learned a few science words that are very important:
"balance"
"stable"
"balance point"
"counterweight"
"wobble"
Today's experiment: Try to make a pencil balance on its tip while resting on a popsicle stick taped to the desk!
Ryan clipped clothespins to his pencil to add extra weight.
Ella made her pencil more weighted at the bottom of it.

Darian gives her set-up a try:

Will gave it a good first effort!

Jalena tries her best!

Ethan has a good idea!

Next, each child was given a piece of flexible wire to use. Maybe adding wire will help that pesky pencil balance!

Look at Devin's pencil! It's balancing on its tip!

Jalena got hers to balance in a different way.

Hayley got it!

April also managed to get hers to balance!

Look at Will's!

Madhav got it, too!

Go, Carter!

Hannah did it!

Yay, April!

Ethan's is balancing sideways!

You did it, Darian!

Don't tip it over, Max!

Lookin' good, Anya!

Nice one, Macy!

Nice one, Deana!

Nice, Jayden!

Science rocks!!

My "Me" Book

One of the ways we've been getting to know each other is by completing a book called "My Me Book". One of the pages asks each child to measure himself/herself with inches and pounds.
Anya measures her partner's finger:

Hannah and Makayla work together:

Ryan and Max:

Jalena is hard at work!

Anya and Jaden:

April helps Jalena: (nice socks!)

Samantha and Deana:

Carter and Madhav:

How long is your nose, Ryan?

This has been a fun book to make!

Our First Painting Project!

Everyone in our class painted their self-portrait this past week.

Many kids tried mixing water with tiny drops of different colors to get that perfect "skin" color.

There are few things more exciting than a brand new paint set!

The finished product :
(Can you tell whose is whose?)

What a fantastic bunch of artists we've got in Room 14!!
